"Rocky
Horror Show"
August 24 – September 23, 2006
By Richard O'Brien
Directed by Kevin T. Morales
Many of us remember going to the midnight showings of the
film versions of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” back in the
late 1970s and ’80s. Some of us even threw toast and rice.
Possibly audience members costumed like the actors performed
in front of the screen.
The show currently at Town Hall Theatre is exactly like the
film, and yet, nothing like the film. Director Kevin Morales
brings a euphoric energy to this staged production of "Rocky
Horror Show," with a lively cast made up of Broadway actors
as well as some familiar faces (well, if you can even
recognize them, thanks to Melissa Paterson’s fantastical
costumes and makeup design).
One of the actors had never even seen
the film. “That’s what makes it interesting for me,” says
Henry Perkins, who plays a delivery boy and a scientist in
the show. He sings the show- stopper “Hot Patootie” and
likens it to another part he played in 2004: Kenicke in
CCMT’s “Grease!”
“Eddie is Kenicke,” he says of the delivery boy who
undergoes a scientific experiment.
Sharing the stage in “Rocky Horror Show” is Ryan Meulpolder,
who plays Rocky. Ryan, however, is familiar with the film,
since he used to be one of those guys who would perform in
front of the screen at all those midnight shows in Berkeley
a decade ago. He played Rocky then, too.
“The challenge is trying to get all the old stuff out of my
head,” he says.
Portraying Magenta is Rebecca Elyse, who says it’s a bit of
a stretch. “I usually play the innocent,” she says. “Magenta
has this subtle wildness.” But, she adds, she knows the show
like the back of her hand. As a baby, her mom would take her
to the movie version.
Also starring are Anne Letscher (Janet), who recently
understudied Chava on Broadway’s revival of “Fiddler on the
Roof"; and Peter Matthew Smith (Brad), who played Motel in
“Fiddler on the Roof” and was also on Broadway in
“Hairspray,” “Mama Mia” and “Rent.” Alec Warwick (Dr. Frank
’N’ Furter) is originally from England, where he starred in
“Little Shop of Horrors” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
Rounding out the cast are Bill Clemente, Sean Robert
Griffin, Meghann May and many Transylvanians.

Audience members are welcome to
purchase drinks and snacks downstairs and bring them to
their seats in the upstairs theater; those over 21 might
enjoy the show's signature drink, a spicy Bloody Mary!

adult themes, sexuality).
